“I get sick of eating the same thing all the time.” That is one excuse I hear ALL the time when it comes to reasons people do not want to meal prep. While I am not one of those people, I can totally eat the same thing for every meal every day for weeks, my husband absolutely cannot. Here are my tips to mix up your meals without buying the entire grocery store each week:
1. Make your foods in bulk but do not separate them into meals until you are ready to eat: prep at least two different types of protein and 2-3 different types of carb sources and keep them in larger containers in the fridge. This will allow you to mix and match your meals during the week.
2. Keep different sauces in the fridge: at any one time I will have 6-7 different sauces in the fridge so even if we are eating the same types of foods, I can flavor each meal differently. For example, right now I have Bolthouse Farms Creamy Balsamic Dressing, Buffalo Sauce, Barbeque Sauce, Honey Mustard, Spicy Mustard, and Caesar dressing. For the honey mustards, salad dressings, and barbeque sauces we have lower sugar and higher sugar options so I can have the lower-calorie option and my husband can have the higher calorie option.
3. Make foods you genuinely like: another thing I hear all the time is people saying “I hate broccoli I’m so sick of eating it every day.” So don’t ! If you genuinely don’t like broccoli, or some other type of food, then don’t force yourself to eat it every day. There are plenty of other options out there, the more you force yourself to eat the things you don’t like, the greater the chance you give up altogether.
4. Try new things: try a new seasoning, cooking your food a different way, buying a different type of vegetable, etc. I tell my clients that each week they should have at least one, if not more, different type of food than the previous week. This could mean regular potatoes instead of sweet potatoes, pork instead of chicken, salads instead of roasted vegetables. Changing up your foods from week to week, even if it is just one food, will prevent you from getting completely sick of your meals.
In the end, if meal prepping just is not your thing, you despise cooking and don’t have the time for it, there are plenty of precooked foods in stores with decent macros. Become best friends with places like Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and Sprouts and you can probably get away with never really cooking again…just know you’re going to be spending a little bit more money in the process.
